Winter in the Midwest

It's cold here and will be getting colder. Yes, I know it's worse in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Dakotas, but this is where I am.

Currently it's 14 (-10), the wind's blowing at 21 mph. Wind chill is about -4 (-20). We have more than a foot of snow on the ground, judging from the snow 'hats' on the bushes.

That's the view from my open garage door, looking toward the main entrance to our building. The snow wasn't plowed today, but you can see the mound on the left there from previous plowings.

I haven't left home today. Won't be leaving home tomorrow, either, when it will be serious cold. Our predicted high for Monday is -13℉ (-25) with wind chills around -40.

-40 is the magic point where degrees F = degrees C.

Exposed skin freezes in about five minutes at that temperature, even when it's wind chill and not actual air temperature. There is nothing I need worth that kind of risk.

According to the National Weather Service, the record low for January 5 in Chicago is -18, set in 1884. The predicted low for tonight is -15℉. We'll be close.

The record low for January 6 is -14, set in 1988. That one will go, as tomorrow they say the high will be -13, with a low of -20

I will make coffee, maybe soup, read, edit, stay cozy. I hope you're cozy, too.

How's winter by you?

Very wet. Flooding rivers and exceptional tides all round the UK. And we are told to blame the US! Apparently your weather has affected the jet stream which sweeps over us. This is how bad it is - only 9 holes open at the golf course!

I've seen how storm after storm is passing over you and pictures of some pretty spectacular waves crashing on the shore. We changed the jet stream? I'm sorry.

Well, 9 holes are better than none, I guess. Maybe it will dry out soon.

Yikes, yes stay warm and safe. We are finally keeping steady in the twenties and thirties, with overnights in the teens. Your post makes our weather seem quite balmy!

Sorry to read about your brutal weather. REALLY sorry that the midwest has chosen to send its weather east!
