Notes and whatnot

This is a place for you to leave thoughts, greetings, messages, and comments that aren't (necessarily) related to my posts.  If we're lucky, conversations will spontaneously break out now and then.  Thanks to friend Dixie (via her friend Jilly) for the idea for a page like this.

As always, politeness counts.  I've never needed a "mallet of loving correction" like John Scalzi wields with such accuracy and stamina.  I don't want one, either.

So, folks, whatcha' thinking?

I guess I am coming to the party a little later than I thought, but I just discovered that the fish in your header "aquarium" follow the mouse pointer. How cool!

Kat said...

Isn't it? AND if you click your mouse you can feed them. :-) At least one person (who's identity I will not divulge) has claimed to have overfed the fish. It's fine with me - this is one tank I don't have to clean!

I, too, like feeding the fish! And visiting the blog, too. Thanks Jilly via Dixie.

Oh, it is a great idea!

What happens if you over feed the fish?

You should turn on threaded comments, too. I did and I like them.

Richard Kimball said...

OK- thats just too addictive. Where is the no fishing sign? :-)

Kat said...

LOL, Richard. This tank doesn't have the problem of herons munching on the fishy buffet.

Dixie, I don't expect so much traffic that threaded comments will be needed.

Welcome home! For the uninitiated (i.e. ME), what is the green flash? I have heard of Red sky at morning/Red sky at night...

Kat said...

Sunlight contains the entire visible spectrum, of course, and this is scattered by the atmosphere. The green flash is a 'flash' of bright green light that happens just as the top of the sun drops below the horizon. At that particular point, all the other colors are scattered either up or down. The green comes straight at you.

It happens at sunrise, too, but it's harder to know when to stare at the horizon then.

You need an unobstructed view of the horizon to see it. No clouds, no trees, no mountains. I saw it on a cruise in the Gulf of Mexico years ago.

You describe it as a flash - is it really such a short-lived phenomenon i.e. you blink you miss it?

Kat said...

Yes, Richard, it's blink and you miss it! At least in the mid and southern latitudes. I've heard that north of the Arctic circle on certain days it can last 10 minutes - when the sun just hovers at that 'green flash' spot.

Kat said...

Well, I didn't get to see the green flash on this trip. :-( Next time maybe there won't be so much rain, or mountains to the West, and I'll have better luck.

Saw Cat Valente at a local library this evening, reading from her latest children's book The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There. During the Q/A session, she shared that the first novel she ever wrote was during NaNoWriMo! Squeeeeeeee

Back in 2003 I 'won' NaNo but either didn't download the winner icon or lost it in transition between computers. A big THANK YOU to my NaNo buddy Aggie80 for sharing his. Now the line of winner icons at the bottom of the home page here at my blog is complete!

Today is the first Monday of NaNo. I just reached word count (8490 total; 1688 words for the day) and I'm heading out to have a nice dinner in celebration. When I return I'll try to boost my numbers to have a cushion for the work week.

I love November...

We couldn't find our reading copy of Hogfather so I bought a new one. Ughh! There are many spots where the word "ain't" is inserted - presumable for the 'mericans. I KNOW that wasn't in the other version we had! It's jarring and I DO NOT LIKE.
